...so.... anyone into this group?

Granted, their 80s material is more synth-based and could possibly be filed away under New Wave/Synth Pop (it's a stretch, but it could be done...). Fans of this type of music, I assume, made a "Dark Wave" label to better suit the music (maybe someone with a better knowledge on the subject could tell us about the origins of the word) because New Wave does sound weird to define Clan Of Xymox. More recently though (actually, it's more like the past decade... ) they have gone through various changes - stylistically as well as their line-up. I guess now they could be termed as a full-blown Goth band.

Personally, I like their early stuff better, but that's just a matter of taste, of course. Basically, it's Subsequent Pleasures/The Demos, Medusa, and Clan Of Xymox (and maybe even Twist Of Shadows) that I often find myself listening to. Once Peter Nooten (sp?) and Anke Wolbert (sp?) left, the style changed for better or worse. I've still yet to listen to the Phoenix album, which, I think, was the last one with all original members...

Any thoughts?

I've only ever heard one of their songs, "Muscoviet Mosquito"- it's quite old, eh? If I wanted to check them out, which of the albums you named do you suggest I start with?

"Muscoviet Mosquito" was part of the original e.p. Subsequent Pleasures released in 1984. It was re-recorded for their self-titled, debut album in 1985, but for anyone who hasn't been exposed to their music yet, I'd recommend their albums (and the songs to look for in these albums) in the following order:

Medusa (1986): "Medusa," "Louise," "Agonised By Love," and "Masquerade."

Clan Of Xymox (1985): "A Day," "Stranger," "No Human Can Drown," "Equal Ways," "No Words."

Subsequent Pleasures (1984): "Going Round," "Call It Weird," "No Words (demo)," "Equal Ways (demo)."

The Peel Sessions (1986): "Mesmerized."

Twist Of Shadows (1989)

Hidden Faces (1997)

...and the rest: Notes From The Underground (2001), Remixes From The Underground (2002?), Live (200?), Creatures (1999?), Headclouds (199?), Metamorphosis (199?). These past albums, with the exception of Hidden Faces, to me, aren't up to par with their early work, but, again, that's just a matter of personal taste. Hope this helps.

I have one of their songs on a compilation CD. I just don't recall the name of it.

I listen to "twist of shadows" in the car all the time. I still love it.
"Tonight" is one of the most romantic songs I ever heard. (and I always thought he was hot) lol.
"time will fly tonight...
time flies
only with you.
time dies,
only with you..."

Is that his name, Peter...?
I haven't heard their new stuff. But I do love their earlier songs. Before "twist of....." too.

The male vocalist's name is Ronny Moorings (he also writes and composes most of the songs). Peter Nooten is the name of a former member. I'd definitely recommend the Medusa album to any fan of New Wave, Synth Pop, New Romantic, etc. Their style was a cross between The Cure and Depeche Mode - a very good one!

I love these guys. I have the Stranger/A Day, Medusa, Twist Of Shadows & Phoenix on CD. My Ex got me into these guys along with groups like This Mortal Coil. She had Stranger and Medusa on vinyl. I got the CD versions a few years later. When I hear "Michelle" I think of my Ex (hence the name). "Obsession" and "Evelyn" still give me chills when I listen to them.

I saw one of their videos just the other day on VH1 Classics. It was off of the Clan of Xymox LP, but I couldn't tell you what the song was. I had never even heard of them before Sunday afternoon.
