I hope this is the right place to start this thread. Sorry if not!

Are their certain songs you hear that bring back memories? For me songs are pretty much a link to events and dates. A flood of memories can come rushing back just hearing a few notes to a song! This is a pace to post a song and tell us what memory is linked to that song. Don't worry if someone has allready posted a song you want to. Different memories for different folks!;)

Ok, I'll start with Rock Lobster from the B52's since I just heard it and got the idea for this thread.:p That song brings back memories of pool partys at my friends house my JR year in HS, 1986-87. We would always play this song. It was one of the few where almost everyone would get up and dance. As soon as we heard the very first beat we would jump up and start movin'! Rock Lobster still brings a big ol' smile to my face.:D

Many songs have alot of meanings to me and they do bring back alot of memories. I'll have to dig through my music and then post some of them. Great topic.

Here is a list, I can't say why but these songs make me sit back and sigh:

I miss you-Klymaxx
All cried out-Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam with Full Force
Against all odds-Phil Collins
Silent running (On Dangerous Ground)-Mike + the Mechanics
Heaven-Bryan Adams (my first dance)
Never say goodbye-Bon Jovi (my first kiss)
Didn't we almost have it all-Whitney Houston

I guess I'm a sucker for slow tunes :) I'm not sure why, my first serious relationship ended in 1990 so it wasn't like these songs were out after I broke up with someone, although that's what they're all about  There's about a million more I can't think of off hand.

There are just so many songs that bring back so many different memories, it would be impossible to list them all.

"Never Say Goodbye" by Bon Jovi transports me immediately to my Prom Night and all the happy and bittersweet memories from that event.

I love this topic, Lisa! There are so many songs I have fond memories of but here are a few:

Is This Love? - Whitesnake - This song was my ex-husband and I's song when we started dating and the times were really good between us.

Rebel Yell - Billy Idol - makes me think of a school dance I was at in the 7th grade. That was one of the songs they played that
night.

Wild Child - W.A.S.P. - makes me think of my friend John (who I recently talked to). That song was playing one night when we went cruising with a friend.

...there are many more that I will try to think of to post later. ;)

In the summer of '88 (a hot one) I got to go with my best friend to their family cottage. His big sister brought a friend too, and she played Def Leppard's "Hysteria" in the bom box non-stop, several times every single day. I was very sick of it by the end of the vacation but any song from that album brings back very good memories....

The VAST majority of 80s songs I collect always have some fond memory connected to them. (And since I have several hundred songs collected, it could take DAYS to go through and describe what memory is identified with each song.) I suppose that's why the 80s never seems so far away to me, because I hear each song, and it always brings back the memories fresh anew.

I suppose if I had to identify a few songs with the strongest memories, it would be "The Search is Over" (by Survivor) and "Will You Still Love Me" (by Chicago). During high school I had this big crush on a girl in my class and wanted to ask her out to the junior prom. (The Chicago song was also the prom song as well.) Unfortunately I found out later that she was already going out with someone else. That was a pretty depressing spring for me. :(

Strange as it may sound, whenever I listen to those two songs, I think back about her, junior year, and that spring. Over the years I've found an odd sort of bittersweet comfort in recalling that time. They also kind of hold out a sense of hope that I'll eventually find someone I'll fondly cherish and love.

Yeah, it sounds pretty sappy, but there it is.

I'm just going to post some as I think of them!
Another is Sweet Child O Mine. I dated a guy the summer after my senior year and we always listened to Appetite For Destruction. Paul was really, really hot! He played drums in a band and had this long dark beautiful hair.

Well - as has been said, sooo many 80's songs have memories attached to them - for better or worse. To name them all would be like making a master thesis (except maby the boring part of that) :). But to contribute I guess I better post one ;)

Hall & Oates' "Maneater" 1982: I was 10 years old and was visiting my fathers farm (He's not a farmer - just lives on the country). I had a two year older friend with me and nine (yes nine) girls, who were all 13-14 years old. They were from the neighbourhood my father and his wife lived at before moving, and he had promised all their parents a week-end off, I guess. I really can't remember the reason so many years after.

Anyhoo they were there - and so was I ;). We were pretty much alone (My father and his wife stayed in the main house), taking full advantage of the indoor pool, having fun and goofing around.

I had my first kisses that week-end. A girl I had a crush on was there, and she and another girl took turns kissing me through out the week-end. I guess they thought it was a bit funny, but I was really confused and definately into these new emotions. To me, they were really a lot older and "experienced" :). It didn't go any further than that, of course, but it was a memorable week-end like no other. And when ever I listen to "Maneater" I get some of that feeling back.

Today I wish I could only be stowed away on a remote farm with nine girls again :naughty: Of course they also had to be a
lot older

There are so many, but I'll post some of my major ones.

"Private Eyes" by Hall & Oates - October 1981, my best friend Liese's mom took us and her sisters camping at Assateague Island for the weekend while Liese's dad was camping with his Boy Scout troop at another campground on the island. Liese and I would hike down along the beach after her mom was asleep and meet some of the guys from the scout troop, and played on the beach in the moonlight. Nothing romantic, but just fun.:D

"Open Arms" by Journey - always the last song played at dances.:) *sigh*

"Shout" by Tears for Fears - This one's my favorite story. 1985, I was over at my boyfriend Eddie's house with another couple and we were all hanging out on the couch watching MTV. We were kind of babysitting Eddie's little brother, Ross, who was about 8 at the time. Ross was running around like a little maniac, then all of a sudden he stopped and screamed at the top of his lungs like he'd been really hurt. We all about jumped out of our skins and were scrambling over to him to find out what was wrong. Ross looked at us and calmly said "Well they said to SHOUT!"

Wow, now that's how most guys wish their first kisses happened.

Okay here's another one. Kiss Off from Violent Femmes. My friends boyfriend always had this in his cassette deck. When she would take his car we would pick up all our friends crank this song and just sing at the top of our lungs. I swear we would be so hoarse by the end of the night. We all sang so bad too. But it sure let out all our anxiety!:D

There are so many songs that bring back memories from my past. One of the biggest memories comes from the song, I Remember You by Skid Row. It was a song that my girlfriend and myself liked.

Maybe, I will post others as I think of them.

I laughed at this one, because as soon as I saw this song, I thought of the trip to Niagara Falls and the Whitesnake tape in my stereo, that autoreversed about four times on the way back to Brockport, NY.

Other songs and memories:

Love Bites by Def Leppard - my fave song when I was fighting with my first boyfriend

Too Turned On and All Night Passion by Alisha, and White Lines (Don't Do It), because they were played at the under 21 club my friends and I went to in high school.

Good Enough (from the Goonies) by Cyndi Lauper because that movie was playing at the movie theater when I started working there

Kyrie and Broken Wings by Mr. Mister, and Everybody Wants to Rule the World and Shout by Tears for Fears, because my friend got me those albums one year for my birthday (I have no idea why, either)

Rock the Casbah by the Clash, because it was on the radio the year I started high school, and my friend loved that song, so I bought her the 45 for Christmas.

I Want to Be a Cowboy by Boys Don't Cry and Rock Me Amadeus by Falco, because my friends and I used to die laughing at those songs. One of my friends and I used to sing I Want To Be a Cowboy in gym class all the time.

Rumors, Let's Go All the Way, and The Rain because they were on the radio every day on my way home from school my senior year.

Lost in Emotion by Lisa Lisa, because all my friends used to sing it to me (because of ONE WORD IN THE SONG).

We've Only Just Begun by the Carpenters, because that was our senior prom theme.

Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin because it was played at EVERY SCHOOL DANCE, and I hated it! Speaking of school dances, I can't leave out Madonna's Crazy for You.

Turning Japanese by the Vapors, because my cousins and I used to watch MTV looking for this video, and crack up everytime it was on.

Lady in Red - because the girls in my dorm loved that song. I hated it to begin with, but after hearing it forty times a day, I really really hated it!

Borderline by Madonna reminds me of shopping for bridesmaids dresses for my cousin's wedding. That song was playing in her car when she took us to the bridal shop.

Like many other people have mentioned, I could list about a thousand others, but I thought this was a sampling of songs that evoke certain memories for me.

Ok...now I'll explain why QUIET RIOT'S "BANG YOUR HEAD (METAL HEALTH) brings back memories. ...

It was a perfect Sat. night. The bunch of us had been cruising then decided to go out to some guys house. We partied and my cousin was totally wasted. She went and sat between these two giant speakers...the stereo was blasting this song! I remember how she looked to this day. It was great! I still remind her of it too!

 This is a much better image than 12 guys playing DONG! :hammer: on a farm.

Your Smiling Face - James Taylor reminds me dating my wife. Hands to Heaven - Breathe and Right Next To Me - Whistle remind me of girls I had crushes on.

Pop Muzik - M reminds me of the first time I listened to American Top 40 with Kasey Kasem.

I'd Really Love to See You Tonight - England Dan and John Ford Coley: my friend Joel was about to throw this 45 as a frisbee to destroy it, but I told him to listen to it first because it was a cool song. We listened to it nearly every time we played after that.

Right On Track - Breakfast Club and Bizarre Love Triangle - New Order remind me of dancing at Club Disney in Disneyland.

Kiss Me - Stephen TinTin Duffy reminds me of another trip to California.

For now, all I can remember is...

Venus - Bananarama
I first heard this song on TV through it's video. It was the extended version and at the time, there was a wicked thunderstorm. Since I love storms, I always think of that day when I hear "Venus" by them.

Don't You Forget About Me - Simple Minds
My trip to Italy (my father's hometown) in 1985. This song was all over the place 24/7. I previously hated it and it reminded me of "The Breakfast Club" when I saw it on video. Since my trip, I ended up liking it and to this day, I still remember that summer in Italy even though I've returned many times after.

I can't remember the majority of them, but here are some:

1) Melissa Etheridge - Come To My Window. I don't really like it much, but when I went to Alaska and saw my daughter for the first time (LONG story), that was on the radio in the car on the drive home. Everytime I hear that song, I remember seeing my 6 month old.

2) Escape Club - I'll Be There. This reminds me of most of the relationships I've had.

3) Mr. Big - To Be With You. Actually brings back some bad memories. My g/f was pregnany (different g/f), and we were going through some HARD times, and I heard this on the radio daily for months. It just never fit right.

4) Van Halen - Right Now. I saw the video years ago right after we found out she was pregnant (not my daughters mother, different chick) and some of the scenes in the video didn't help our current situation.

5) Barry Goudreau - Hard Luck. Strange memory here. During my heavy drinking stage (that most of us go through), everytime I put this CD in and listened to this song, I always needed 2 or 3 bottles of Miller 32 oz... and would start drinking them heavily. To this day I have no idea why I did this.

6) The Tubes - She's A Beauty. I first heard this several years ago at home while slamming beer. Immediately reminded me of my daughter.

7) Belinda Carlisle - Heaven Is A Place On Earth. I heard this during the 7th grade (I think it was the 7th grade), and it was played on the radio all the time. I wasn't overly fond of the middle school, but I liked the song and the times were pretty good.

8) J. Geils Band - Centerfold. Just mental pictures of where I lived when this came out. I remember it was all the radio all the time.

9) Amy Grant - That's What Love Is For. I'm not really a fan of hers, but a g/f of mine had the single when it came out, and everytime after she played it, we played hide the salami. I learned to like it real fast! :D

There are probably others, but I would have to look through my mp3 list at home to remember them all.

This goes back a ways past the 80's, but... Every time I hear Kung Fu Fighting (which is about once every 10 years) it reminds me of when I had the mumps back in late '74. We had just moved to Tennessee from Maryland and hadn't been here a month when I got laid up. Kung Fu Fighting just happened to have been a very popular song around the time and I must have heard it a hundred times that week.

Every time I hear "Just Once" by James Ingram it reminds me of all the girls that I didn't have the guts to ask out during my senior year in High School. That was a popular slow song that they played at the skating rink and it pissed me off when they played it because I didn't have anyone to skate with. I reckon I should have taken my Irish Setter with me.

4-05-04, 06:42 AM
Move Closer by ( I think ) Phyllis Nelson was playing when i proposed to my wife and it was played as our 'first dance'
Hard Day by OMD was a song which for some reason got me through the day after both my grans and my Fathers funerals.
One Nation Under a Groove by Funkadelic is bringing back memories of my favourite year in secondary school when I could do no wrong and, with my best mate Sean, would sing it constantly.

The only one i can think of at this moment is "I saw your Mommy" by Suicidal Tendencies. My friends and I were cruising around and I was listening to it on my walkman. I have a couple that are really sticking out in my mind right now LOL One is just too sad, but every time I hear "The Flame" by Cheap Trick I am instantly brought back to the day my friends mom was killed in a car accident at the end of our street, it was the first video I saw on MTV that day, so now whenever I hear that song I think of that :( The other is the song "This Is The Time" by Billy Joel (I think that's the name of it, lol), but anyhoooo it's because when my family took a road trip from Massachusetts to Florida over Christmas/New Years 1986/87 whenever we turned the radio on that song was playing on practically every station!! ROFL My brother Dave to this day HATES that song LMAO And the funny thing is, that song turned out to be my Senior Dinner Dance song LMAO

Yes..there's lots of them. But just to name a few..

CHRIS DEBURGH: LADY IN RED....I was seeing J at the time and trying to get the message across (after many attepts ) to another guy. We were all up at the hottest bar/club at the time..this song came on and J & I were dancing to it. ...this and CUTTING CREW'S: JUST DIED IN YOUR ARMS TONIGHT remind me of J.

ATLANTIC STARR: ALWAYS....this was me and my first husband's song. We had it played at our wedding and danced to it at our reception in 1988... I had it played at his funeral in 1989.

Forever Free by WASP.. Reminds me of the Summer romance i had when I was 15. Hampton Beach.

I ride all alone and can't see The road to nowhere anymore
And shadows whispers are calling me
To forbidden forrests by the shore
And there she fell deep in the night
One breath away from heaven's light
And she said- don't cry for me, I'm leaving you

The wind cries her name in the breeze But I can't hold her anymore
Some fallen angel had come to me
And fell to heavy on my soul
And stole from me the love that I heard
Lords of time say never die
And said- don't cry for me, cause I'll be
Riding the wind forever free
High in the wind forever free
I'll ride the wind forever free
High in the wind forever free

Forever in my hearts afire, a fire burning

Just like everyone else, a lot of them have memories attached to them so I'll run down the ones that have the strongest for me (3 from each year). A few of these songs I wasn't necessarily crazy about, but when I hear them they bring back some strong memory of a person or event:

'80 - I Got You - Split Enz; It's Still Rock N Roll To Me - Billy Joel; Last Chance - Shooting Star
'81 - Who's Crying Now - Journey; The Breakup Song - Greg Kihn Band; Working In The Coalmine - Devo
'82 - We Got The Beat - Go-Go's; Kids In America - Kim Wilde; Tainted Love - Soft Cell

First song that comes to mind is Ashes To Ashes, David Bowie. I was in hospital at the time it was a big hit here in NL. I was 11 years old and had my first puppy love there. He was 14 years old and his name was Martin. All we did was hold hands and walk around the halls together. One time we were in the recreation room together watching a music show on tv and another boy said that Martin looked like David Bowie (meaning ugly) and since that moment I loved the song and David. So when ever I hear it, it takes me back to that moment in the recreation room.
