View Full Version : Why'd the Rap/Hip Hop forum merge with this one?

I guess I'm guilty of not posting enough in the Rap Forum if a lack of threads and posts was the reason of the fall of the "'80s Rap and Hip Hop Forum" and then having it subsequently merging with this one. I just now noticed this.

But honestly, I don't see any real relationship with musical style of rap with that of R&B, Funk or Jazz. Other then having the obvious urban and Black roots.

R&B and Funk go together sure, but rap? There's a world of difference between the hardcore in your face gangsta rappers of the '80s like Ice T, Public Enemy and N.W.A., and an '80s funk band like Morris Day and the Time or a jazz artist like Kenny G. But they're sharing the same forum? I'm not sure if that's right.

course, that's just my opinion and 2 cents.

Probably the reason it was done is to save space and because the forum itself did not get very much use. Roem will be able to explain why it was done, but that is my hunch.

And your hunch is correct Stacy. None of these genres get enough activity on their own, and while there may only be a subtle link to the genres, it's close enough. We use the top 40/pop forum in the same generalized manner....it's not that big a deal to get bent out of shape over...

I was more just very curious, then anything else......

I have to disagree with the original statement that rap has nothing to do with R&B. Most rap songs sample old R&B songs and in the early 80's, rap could only be heard on R&B stations. Rap, in the early 80's, charted mostly on the R&B charts as well. I see it fitting together like a hand in glove myself.
