I've been using IE 6 for awhile with no problem but a couple of months ago it started accepting cookies, regardless of what I had the settings on. I even get the little eye/red dot symbol at the bottom of the screen and it still accepts the cookies. Has anyone else noticed this on their machine?

I only used IE 6 briefly with Windows XP. I absolutely hated the new IE so I stay at 5.5 now.

I never noticed the problem, but I don't care about the cookies. They never bothered me.

If found this page in the Microsoft knowledge base:

http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q296363

My recommendation is to use support.microsoft.com, search the topic for ie 6, then use the cookies keyword. A lot of results came up and there might be other solutions as well.

I have seen the symbol at the bottom of the screen, you mentioned. It is to let you know that you are visiting an unsecure site, I believe. May be wrong though.

If you are really worried about having the cookies on your system, there is a nice little freewar app that will clean them off (as well as a lot of other junk). It is called Disk Cleaner (http://diskcleaner.tripod.com/). I use it to clean up my system occasionally. Works very well.

I've also found the following command cleans your system nicely:

format c:

Another nice bonus is you amazingly get all of your drive space back! Works wonders. :D

LOL @ Aaron. Nice one. I hope he didn't follow that advice.

You're welcome, Smurf. Disk Cleaner is a handy little utility.

Thanks aaron and Shakey for the suggestions. The diagnosis on the MS site didn't match my problem so I sent them an online help request. They told me to contact the people who built my machine (Gateway), who in turn referred me to MS. If I'd known they were going to send me in circles, I wouldn't have bothered.
BTW Shakey, that little symbol is for the privacy report, which shows you what cookies were blocked. I think I'll try your idea.

Why does that support deal not surprise me? Microsoft says to contact Gateway/HP/Dell/etc because they made your machine, but they DIDN'T write Exploder. They just don't want to support more than they have to. You call Gateway and they say "we didn't write Exploder, call Microsoft". It's just like the recycling arrows, it never ends.

I usually just leave cookies enabled. They don't bother me. You can always clean cookies upon exit or use Shakeys idea of removing cookies with that utility.
