1942 Fleetwood Mac's namesake Mick Fleetwood is born in Redruth, England.

1944 Guitar great Jeff Beck is born.

1949 Bassist John Illsley of Dire Straits is born in Leicester, England.

1957 Astro, of the band UB40, is born on this date.

1959 Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark's Andy McCluskey is born in Wirral, England.

1961 Curt Smith of Tears for Fears is born in Bath, England.

1981 Diana Ross and Lionel Richie release "Endless Love."

1984 In Dortmund, Germany, Yes are joined onstage by Jimmy Page, who joins in on a rendition of the Beatles' "I'm Down."

1989 The Who kick off their latest reunion tour in Toronto. A Lennon/McCartney song tops the country charts for the first time. It's Rosanne Cash's cover of "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party." Garth Brooks debuts at the Grand Ole Opry.

1990 Donnie Wahlberg tumbles through a trapdoor while performing onstage in New York with New Kids on the Block, seriously injuring himself. The Cure keyboardist Roger O'Donnell leaves the band. He is replaced by the Cure's guitar tech.

1992 Billy Joel never graduated high school, but went on to become immensely famous. So this year Hicksville High gives the piano man his diploma.

1996 Van Halen announce that Sammy Hagar has left the band, and that David Lee Roth is back as a temporary replacement.

1997 LaToya Jackson divorces her husband/manager, Jack Gordon.

1999 Eric Clapton auctions off 100 of his guitars in New York to raise money for the Crossroads Clinic in Antigua. The 1956 Fender Stratocaster on which he composed "Layla" fetches a record price of $497,500.

2000 Kiss begin auctioning off costumes and props from their 25 years in show business.
