View Full Version : A Piece of Internet Radio Dies
Greenway88 6-21-02, 02:26 PM Yesterday the Librarian of Congress announced that he had accepted modified royalty rates that were less than those originally proposed by an arbitration panel. Unfortunately, my favorite Internet radio station is still deciding to call it quits as they cannot afford even these royalties. This is a sad day for me.
Flashback radio was the perfect blend of everything 80s. It had everything from the biggest pop songs to serious dance tunes, tons of big hair and glam rock to new wave classics. Plus it played every single one of the one-hit wonders featured in my polls. And it was all listener driven.
I hope that there will still be a place for independent Internet radio stations in the future. They truly are unique in this world of big corporation enterntainment beasts like Clear Channel.
Best of luck to Club 977. I may be giving you guys a serious listen as well as Java Jane's broadcast, KJQ.com and DJLex.com. Though I suspect that the face of Internet radio as a whole has changed forever.
psychocandy 6-21-02, 03:03 PM That really sucks! The big money-grubbing corporations have totally ruined broadcast radio, and now it looks like internet radio will go the same way.
It seems to me that a lot of people listen to Internet radio, and that stations like Flashback Radio were only asking for a small donation in exchange for their service, to help offset the royalty fees. The corporate giants have made quality programming so hard to come by, and I don't understand why more people aren't willing to make a small contribution in order to have such a privilege.
Brand1974 6-21-02, 03:06 PM Greenway,
I listened to Flashbackradio.com also, and it was a great radio station. I was even a member of the Yahoo group for it. If it does go, it will be hard to find one just as good as it.
I know Club977 is the "radio" of 80sXchange, but that station plays the same hits over and over, and songs that I don't care to hear. So, I may continue listening to Java Jane's.
Launch is also a great internet radio station. It is soley based on your personal ratings of artists, songs, albums, etc...
I hope Flashbackradio comes back.
Greenway88 6-21-02, 03:16 PM Hey Brandon, I'll let you know if I hear anything. By the way, saw your pic on the yahoo group site, you Ravens fan you. I was Steve In Utah on the request line for Flashback Radio. If you like Java Jane, you might like the other stations I posted above. I doubt we'll ever see another comprehensive 80s station like Flashback Radio.
Brand1974 6-21-02, 03:59 PM Well, here's a station you may want to check out as well. It is request based.
KickUpThe80s.com (http://www.kickupthe80s.com)
It seems like a decent online radio station.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I firmly believe that competition is good and healthy but if YOU don't voice your concern over this ruling, I don't care what Internet Radio station you listen to, they will all be gone and they will be gone soon. $11,000 dollars a year for licensing fees is out of my budget and there's many more internet stations that will have to pay more and be forced to shut down just like me.
Go to:
www.congress.org
Write your congress people. Tell them how you feel about shutting down your favorite radio station (whether is be club 977 or any other one) because of the outrageous fees imposed. It will take 5 minutes and if enough people write, something can and will be done.
If you want to understand this ruling more please check out:

Club 977 The 80s Channel plans to stay on the air until the RIAA forces me off the air or I get sued. Plain and simple.

Brand1974 6-23-02, 10:07 AM club977,
That is a great idea, I just did it! I hope everyone else on this board does this as well. Maybe Sal, could send out an email to every Xchange member with this link or post it at the top of the message boards.
Brand....thank-you, thank-you, thank-you
Done as well... I'll post a link to this under the Member's Lounge so that it will generate more attention...
Good luck, Jeff!

It is important that if you love internet radio, you send a fax to your senators and representative.
Good news for me. This was on the Flashback Home page today: BREAKING NEWS!!! We can't believe it! As we were in the process of shutting down the station, someone from up above may have sent a miracle to rescue Flashback Radio! Out of the goodness...or should we say greatness...of this person's heart, Flashback Radio may be saved!
