I was just wondering if any of you game enthusiasts ever made any maps or levels for a game? You know, like Quake, CS, Heroes of Might & Magic etc. ?

I've made some maps for HOM&M III, and are currently making one for IV. It's great fun, but takes a lot of effort to make a proper map. The reward is when you get some positive feedback from a player that enjoyed it :D Never made any for the 3D games, though.

Also, I like to DL user maps. There's some space between the very good ones, but when they work out just right, it's often greater fun than the original ones.

I have a big ongoing world map that may get used in a fantasy RPG campaign, someday. Programs that let you reveal and hide place names, equator lines, roads and borders with different layers are very useful for this, and for mapping dungeons. But for video games, no, I never have.

I have made several maps for "Revolt". It's a great little racing game where you drive remote control cars. A friend of mine and I hook up on the weekends play a few games over the net.

Made several, mostly the easy to make kind you find in THPS 2, WarCraft 2 etc. Only 3D map I ever made was for TimeSpiltters on the PS2 .... I was going to try and make a map for UT, but the map editor keeps crashing on me :(

I love UT, but cannot imagine the time it would take to make a good map for it. I haven't even looked at the editor.

I thinkn you're right about the time it takes to make a good map Shakey, the editor itself doesn't look too complicated from what I get to see before the flucker crashes, at least not if you're used to work with gfx programs :)

So you're a roleplayer, ehh? Used to be so myself. (And for those that might wonder - no we didn't run around any forrest using wooden sticks as swords ;)) Unfortunately I haven't been active in years, but would like to get started again someday with the right people. As you, I also made some "worlds", just not as detailed as I think yours is, and mastered them. Quite fun!

Btw. If you're into fantasy art (And I guess you are, right?) then you should visit my best friends gallery on Elfwood - he's really talented :) Fantasy Gallery (http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/loth/a/r/arne/arne.html)

Nice fluckin' artwork Harket, I can draw myself, but definitely not like that (my style is much more Rune T. Kidde :D ). Give my compliments to Bent :thumb:

I have only made maps for HOMM 3. I have not made one for HOMM4 though.

Just downloaded the "official" beta of the Red Alert 2 map editor. It's fairly simple to use (then again it should be, since this is a 2D game), and you can even make real missions (puttin' events, cinema etc.), not just the skirmish type maps ... Once I get thru' RA2 and Yuri's Revenge, I think I'll give this editor a good run :)

This has made me think about giving it a go again. Think I'll break out the "Revolt" track editor and make another one. :)

I've never made any maps for role playing games, but tried to make maps (on the go, while playing) for a game for the Atari 2600 (Secret Quest) and a game called Kid Icarus for NES.

The Kid Icarus game already had a "pre-map" of sorts, but with the right items would mark each room as you explored it. The "map" had at most 64 squares. Out of curiosity, I explored this fortress, and it took all 64 squares:eek:

Making maps (on the go, while playing) by hand is pretty cool:thumb:

BTW nice artwork, Harket. My favorites are the Black Dragon and Vampire Lord:thumb:

Rune can be very fun to "read" from time to time :) Maybe you could use some of your webspace on your drawings? I've givin' Bent your compliments (he loves that ;)) Should tell you thanks :)

Yeah, he's really good! The Dragons are some of his finest work in my opinion. IRL they are quite big, which make them even more impressive.

Gettin' deeper and deeper into Final Alert 2 .... It's amazing what you can do with this editor, and I haven't even taken the time to mess with the .ini yet
In 6-8 maps time I should be able to make some very nice maps :thumb:

Try Neverwinter Nights, you can create and DM your own adventures.

Yup I read about that, but the thing is, I'm not very much into RPGs .... I've messed a li'l with some Zelda games on emus, and played thru' most of FF Vll on PS1 .... This might be something for Harket tho' he's an old roleplayer :D

I know this is - what - a month late Harket, but since the post got bumped back up I may as well say: that was some great artwork there by Brent Holm on the Elfwood link. I like sketching (and cartooning of course, heh) but never got any good at the colouring thing. I liked the red dragon best.

It certainly is :D I've already got my eyes on that one. A friend bought it, and says it's wonderfull. If it's half as good as they say it is and can deliver half as much as it is promised to do, then I'm in for some rough times ;) My studies will go to s..., my "real" life will end and I'll probably order food on-line for the next year or so :goofy: Hate hate hate the gameing industry - it's a conspiracy, you know! "How do we fluck up Harkets life?", is what's it's about. It's true. It is, I tell you!!!

He's good, that's for sure! Have you considered making a gallery of your own on-line? Would be nice to view your work :)

Btw. it's Bent (not Brent) - we used to tease him by calling him Bent Over

Well, galleries that good make me want to not bother :) but maybe a cartoon gallery someday. If you go to weirdal.com and click on "Gallery", a piece of mine called "Fan Art #71" is down there.

D'oh! *smacks forehead* So does he sell any of his work by asking people to "Get Bent"?
