View Full Version : USA vs. Portugal (result inside)
What a game :bigeek:
Everybody totally underestimated USA's chance of scoring three points against Portugal, but those first 30 minutes - man were they great.
3-2 against Portugal is a great result. Nice going US :flag:
Now we are never going to hear the end of that. It was a great game and the US team played well. I still think a draw would have been a fair result, but there is no fair in sports. Congratulations to the US, who now acts like they won the World Cup  ;)
As the ESPN commentator said: They are now celebrating in the endzone!  Where is the endzone on a football pitch? Or are they referring to the American players celebrating in the locker room? ;)
Prefab Sprouter 6-05-02, 07:24 AM Well Done the USA. That is the great thing about world Cup; they always throw up a few surprises!
space-invader 6-05-02, 08:38 AM unbelieveable....
i got home this evening, turned on the tele, saw USA score...."now they are 3-0 up!"...5 minutes later, i picked myself off the floor....
it was a combination of USA playing really well, a little bit of luck (especially the second goal), and a very poor portugal (especially conceding the 3rd goal...where was the defense?)
figo was virtually unsighted
i was very impressed by beasley...he gave portugal all sorts of problems
Greenway88 6-05-02, 09:14 AM I saw the last 15 minutes of the match which was all clock-killing by the US, but it was exciting for me.
OK footballers, put this into perspective for me, was this as big of an upset as our commentators are making this out to be? Portugal was seeded 4th I guess. Where was the US expected to finish in this group, dead last? Is this as big an upset as Senegal over France? What are the prospects of the US getting wins against Korea or Poland? Could the US advance to the 2nd round?
This Yank is not about to brag, but I will say soccer is more exciting when the team you're cheering for is playing well (something doesn't happen often for the US).
I would say that this is a bigger upset than France losing to Senegal. Teams are always aware of the African nations, but no one ever expects anything from the US squad. This time may be different, but they still have to get points against the Koreans and/or Poland.
This is why this sport is great. There are no easy games in football. I think they know that in France and Portugal now. ;) :D
Speaking of the clock killing. I hope this is not going to be a USA trademark. It is one of the reasons why so many football lovers can not stand teams like Argentina and Italy. It is a classic way of ruining the football experience and does not belong in football. That is just my opinion as a football lover.

This was certainly bigger than Senegal beating France, congratulations USA :thumb:
I only got to see the match untill 3-1, but what I saw that far, was USA playing the Potuguese defence wisely. Seemed like Portugal's defenders were slow and unmotivated. They definitely concieved this as an walk-over ....
Compared to the other results of this group, anything can now happen. I think most people had Poland and Portugal goin' thru', but since both teams have played under their usual standard, and both Korea and USA showing some nice attacking football, I say this can go to anyone.
This is turning out to be the WC with the most surprises :thumb:
That's what's so great about football, it's so unpredictable :p
space-invader 6-05-02, 10:17 AM yup i think bigger than senegal beating france as well
still i wouldn't say it's USA's biggest shock result ever, which was when they beat england 1-0 in 1950 world cup
i think USA have a really chance of beating poland...korea might be too tough an ask...they have massive home support (much greater than what japan did) which really seemed to intimidate poland and made the korean players feel invincible!
80sSmurf 6-05-02, 10:23 AM Yup, the crowd sure does make a difference .... In this group anything can happen, nice :p
BTW the rerun has just started, so I'll get to see 2nd half as well .... wooohooooo :1offwall: .... Just too bad I know the result, so the final 15 mins won't really be exciting :(
nolanbuc 6-05-02, 10:47 AM Who says we don't appreciate this game? At least until we lose...lol
Look out Korea, we are gonna spank you in front of your home crowd!! :ego:
It was definitely an amazing game. It was interesting to note that it was also the 1st time the U.S. had scored three goals in a game since the championship against Uraguay in 1930. Beasley and Donovan definitely helped to keep Portugul in check.
Though my favorite play of the game was when Friedel performed a rolling somersault to save the ball.
I'm curious as to how the U.S. will do against South Korea. I have a feeling it will be a harder match than against Portugul since the they will be playing on South Korea's turf and having to play against a team and a home crowd.
BTW it's also interesting to note that Damarcus Beasley is from Fort Wayne. He graduated from a high school only 5-10 minutes from my house.
Go USA:thumb:

Heck Pippi, we have to take them as we get them...Go USA!
space-invader 6-10-02, 07:17 AM AFTER THE KOREA - USA GAME......
well, what can i say....the US have performed well again!
they ground out the result pretty well
korea had their chances, and may rue that penalty....an excellent save by the keeper, but really, the penalty has to be hit harder, especially if you are the #1 penalty taker in the team
the US might even top the group now...that's a scary thought

Indeed
Greenway88 6-10-02, 09:19 AM Scary?? Nah, I don't like these draw things, but I guess points are points. I wached second half. How did Korea score only one goal? They had ten decent chances, at least. And the penalty? I agree with Space Invader, your #1 panelty taker has to kick it better than that! Go USA, beat Poland. :flag:
80sSmurf 6-10-02, 11:14 AM I think USA stand a very good chance of winning this group (or at least go thru'). Poland hasn't really shown anything, and since they're outta the WC they really haven't anything to play for.
As long as SK and Portugal don't draw against each other USA will go thru' even if they loose to Poland :thumb:
I think USA will go through too. It looks good for them. They were lucky today, but luck is part of the game.
Portugal is going to beat South Korea and Portugal and USA will advance.
Prefab Sprouter 6-10-02, 11:53 AM Very True. Although I dont know who USA will face in the 2nd round but they have nothing to fear!
80sSmurf 6-10-02, 12:01 PM I beg to differ Prefab ... Should USA go thru' they'll face a team from Group G; Mexico, Italy, Croatia or Ecuador ... Every team from this group still has a chnace (altho' things are looking might bleak for Ecudaor) ... Both Italy & Croatia are very strong cup teams, even if they don't show much in the group play, both teams tend to show a real talent for playing knock-out games and go far ... Then again USA did beat Portugal, and they've played some nice football so far, will it get them to top 8 ... Well against Croatia, they certainly stand a chance, against Italy I find it highly doubtfull :)
djdaffy1227 6-10-02, 06:11 PM I don't know how the US tied that game. They played some great defense. Friedle played VERY well. South Korea was in control for the whole game. Now that Poland isn't playing for anything but pride, I'm a little worried that the US will take the game lightly. OMG, I'm actually pretending like I know what I'm saying  Look what you people are doing to me
PS: What is a cap?
The word cap is used for number of games. 13 caps for the national team means 13 games. The term comes from the old British tradition of receiving a cap for each game you played on the national team. They don't do that anymore though, but we still use the term cap.
