View Full Version : Summer Time
Here in Kentucky school is letting out on the 30th. That means their will be kids running wild everywhere
How did you guys spend your summer vacations as a kid.
sketcher 5-23-02, 03:53 PM I just watched TV and listened to my records over and over or went to my cousin's house. A couple of times I went to Italy (missed part of Live-Aid).
But I loved the extra hot days and to this day, those really hot days put me in the mood of listening to 80s new wave!
When I was very young....perched in a crab apple tree with my friends Peanuts & Mully....eating until we were sick.
When I got a little older, playing stickball in the playground.
80sSmurf 5-23-02, 03:57 PM Let's see ... BMX, Reading comics, playing football, building hide-outs :p
Roemello 5-23-02, 03:59 PM Just like you said Milani....ran wild everywhere! Hangin around 'hood with friends...getting into mischief :sneaky:, sometimes go to the mall, hit the basketball courts, go the Salem Willows (amusement park type place), Forest River park, sometimes go up to my uncle's camp in NH...just to name a few....I did plenty as a kid..always had fun :D:verycool:
Then sometimes if we were feeling really lazy, hang around the house playing Nintendo :p
As a kid... well I played in the pool, with the slip n slide, willy the water bug, water balloon fights, trips to the water park, and god knows what else.
Seems like ages ago.
I saw some adults playing with a slip n slide on the jerry springer show a few weeks back! I absolutely hate jerry springer, but it was pretty funny.
I guess they didn't read the age range on the box.
We were so poor that we would use garbage bags as a slip and slide
We had fun so it didn't matter.
Those were the days!
Well thats pretty much all a slip n slide is, just a long garbage bag. They also have those holes down the side for water to squirt out of, so they are a combination of a garbage bag and those long flat hoses lined with holes to water your garden.
I have considered buying one, but I don't have a lawn, so that kind of defeats the purpose.
When I was little... my mom would dump my brother & I off at day camp.. so she could go shopping!
Summer reminds me of what George Carlin used to say...
"Summer time was when you used to make your own theme music for yourself as you walked down the street..... ~DA DUUUUMMM~!!!!"
Iluvthe80s 5-23-02, 07:14 PM Kids already were let out of school here yesterday.
I spent my summer's going swimming, going to the movies, having friend's over to my house, etc. Usually my family and I would take some kind of vacation trip to the Gulf, or Sea World, or stuff like that.
I went to Sweden with my family every summer. It was just like at home except for less friends and more mosquitos.
Caligula 5-23-02, 07:20 PM as a kid we played baseball everyday even if we only had 3 to a team , some days we'd walk down to the lake to swim or build a raft to go out to the island, watched very little tv. I do remember chuck woolery as the host of Wheel of fortune and alex Trebeck on high rollers. At night we'd usually just throw rocks at street lights and camp out overnight in our backyards in tents. Basically we lived a Huck Finn existance (with playboy magazines we stole from the construction bulldozers) . But school for us didn't end till the end of June
Going to the museums in the city...The Guggenheim, Museum of Natural History, MOMA ( Museum of Modern Art)
oh yeah,
and the best one:
The Bronx Zoo.

Right down the street about a mile away from me ;)
RetroMan 5-24-02, 12:53 AM uh...swimming, surfing, windsurfing, waterskiing, snorkling and skim-boarding - anyone would think i'm a fish - I still spend most of my summer this way. I think I should change my nickname to King Neptune
Dancingdoll1986 5-24-02, 01:12 AM We'd go to the pool, ride our bikes all over the village, hang out at KMart, (which was across the street--blue plate specials-), watch MTV, call boys and hang up on them, tease other kids....just hung out and had fun!!
ImSoooSure 5-24-02, 01:23 AM We had a creek behind our house with a greenbelt running thru the whole neighborhood. We would play in the park, ride our bikes, go rafting. Younger days I also loved playing with Barbies.
Vilji and I would go on beach trips and walk all around the neighborhood going past boys houses we liked. We also made prank calls DD86. Can't do that anymore w/ caller ID.
My summers way back then... We would cut grass to get money for the pool. Then we would walk barefoot to the pool (usually our feet were scorched) We would hang out at the local fairgrounds playing in the barns. There was a creek in our back yard and we had a mud slide that we would slide down into it. CAtching snakes and frogs. Playing cowboy and Indians in the woods. Running around in a thunderstorm carrying one rubber thong thinking it will save us from getting struk by lightening. :goofy: (i swear you would think I was a hick-shut up Ted! :p )
Sitting in the grass and staring up at the stars for hours. Sitting in the grass and staring up at the clouds. ;) Looking for those seeds that popped in your hands. Picking blackberries and making a cereal with them. (You would spend hours picking the bugs out of your milk.) Playing baseball and football. Running for my life while playing football.( boys never liked girls playing)
As with Lisa aand DD we did the prank calls. I had my Barbies too that I would play with for hours.
Summer times were so wonderful! ;)
Prefab Sprouter 5-24-02, 06:18 AM Yeah Summer was great as a kid. Used to play football all the time with my pals; go cycling all over the City; Make huts in the park; get chased by the older kids; And then for two weeks every year off to the seaside with my family. We used to meet up with the same families there every year and have barbeques and sing song in the sand dunes at night. Great times!
LOSTNTHE80S 5-24-02, 07:48 AM When I was very young..I remember going to Six Flags (it was alot better then)..going to Ohio to camp, my dad and his marine buddy would sit up all night long drinking beer and see who could tell the biggest story. :) Going to Kentucky to camp and go fishing.
If we didn't go anywhere...I remember playing hide and go seek after dark, catching lightening bugs, spraying each other with the freezing water out of the hose, trying to catch the snow cone man, playing baseball, looking forward to the 4th of July carnival when it came to town (my dad was a poiceman so we would always get free tickets, a big box of taffy, and the manager of the carnival would let us pick out a big stuffed animal).
When I was a teenager, we moved to the lake. From then on, my summers were spent fishing, swimming, taking the boat out and checking out the guys at the main boatdocks, working on my tan, riding bikes.
Now...I'm a mom. My girls picked up their report cards day before yesterday. We will be getting our pool ready soon (if it will warm up for a while) We have a 16'X 32' ....4' to 8 1/2' with a sundeck all around. The girls have been swimming underwater for almost 4 years now. Our summers are mostly spent doing BBQ's, swimming, bike riding, going to the park and the zoo, fishing, going to the library, etc...
Summer times back then were always precious. I remember the week before school let out we would get so antsy. We would talk about what we were going to do with our time and ofcourse we would never do it.
Summer times were filled with music and laughter. We would play double dutch and dance all day long. Life was so much simpler back then. We could play in the streets and not worry about some drug pusher coming along.
Prefab Sprouter 5-24-02, 08:41 AM Hey Milani,
You played Double Dutch? That always looked so hard!!!
I mastered in it and also went to tournaments doing it! I was real good.. :p
Not that I am bragging
You should try it ... it isn't as hard as it looks, you just have to have good timing and good rythum.

Wow....then Taz could NEVER do it! (ooooooh.....just kidding Bud, the straight line was there, no way I could pass up the chance to turn it into a drummer joke!)
Darkmatter 5-24-02, 11:50 AM I usually spent my summers playing in the woods... camping, climbing trees, playing 'Army'. Even made many trips to the local swimming pool... where I found out that holding your breath under water was a sport. :D Ahhh, those were the days... when I could swim almost four lengths of the pool underwater before coming up blue.
After receiving a chemistry set one year, I did spend a summer doing things you are not supposed to do. Like mix all the chemicals in a test tube and heat the mixture over flame. The process made a really neat green boiling foam that proceeded to explode from the top of the tube and spew all over my hand and arm. Ouch. :goofy: Why did I do it? Well, the box said never, ever to mix all the chemicals together and I wanted to see 'why not'.

 I had one of those sets once as a kid...did the same exact thing and got the same results  Except it didn't boil over the hand, it just kinda crawled across the floor
The community pool was right behind our back yard, so 90% of my summers growing up was spent at the pool.:) If we weren't at the pool, we'd be at the playground next to it.
Also, my best friend and I used to pretend we were horses and we'd set up an obstacle course out of chairs, the picnic table, broomsticks, etc. in the back yard for a jumping arena.:p
Shortie Blonde 5-24-02, 11:00 PM We go to Six Flags, and various other places like various race tracks and historical (whoo hoo!) sites. They (parents) drag me to old churches and I don't leave the car.
When I'm not on trips, I'm whipping out on my bike. Yeah, it bites. Dodged a car last time. Got a knawed up, not that you wanted to know. I have friends over, we do prank calls (special codes to make the calls secret) and play Truth or Dare. Give history lessons on a certain decade. ;)

 I bet you were on of the kids who always touched the wet paint! :p ;)
Darkmatter 5-25-02, 05:04 PM Nah... I wouldn't touch wet paint. Though if there was a red button that had 'do not push' on it.... I pushed it!
Well summer time also brings Camping!
I am debating sending my middle child to camp.. what memories do all of you have about camping?

Well recently (last summer), it's getting a bit old. I'm not into camping all that much anymore, I'd rather be in a hotel room (to raise hell j/k) after a long night at the race track (that's why we usually camp). If I was lucky, my parents would actaully (DARE I SAY?) buymarshmelloes, but that was not often.
