Hey Y'all,

Which videos would you consider to be just plain awful, even if you liked the artist and song, but the video just stunk?

I think the video to "The Future's So Bright (I Gotta Wear Shades)" is simply dreadful, even though the song is great! I think Timbuk 3 probably spent a buck fifty making that video. The video to "Puttin' on the Ritz" by Taco is actually too painful to watch... absolutely dreadful. :yucky:

Black Sabbath - Zero the Hero
KISS - Lick It Up
Judas Priest - ugh. Great band, some horrible videos. Freewheel Burning, Turbo Lover, Locked In... and it's too bad Priest's "live" videos are taken from the Turbo tour when they were at their worst visually.
Thor - don't remember what it was called. Looked mid-80s.
Accept - Balls to the Wall
Lee Aaron - Metal Queen
Europe - Superstitious
Michael Bolton - Everyody's Crazy
Nina Hagen - Herman Was His Name (I only saw it partially on Beavis and Butthead. What in the frick WAS this????)

and finally... any '80s video set in a courtroom.

I'm sorry Trixter but I can't stand the video for "Like a prayer". I love Madonna but this one was way overboard.

I second that one DJ.

How about the Replacements. I don't remember the song but the video was just a close up of the inside of a speaker going in an out to the music.

I never understood the "Like a Prayer" video. It just made no sense to me. And I never drank Pepsi either :p

I second the motion about videos in courtrooms  and I must add any video that was just the band singing on stage. Talk about zero creativity.

About the Madonna "Like A Prayer" video, I would never say it was awful, it's a great piece of work, but everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'm not saying this because it's Madonna, but rather that the video broadened my way of thinking about the issues contained in the video (i.e. religion, racism, speaking out for justice.)
I'm not implying that you didn't understand all the elements of the video, but a great deal of people just saw it as Madonna trying to be shocking. The video was quite shocking, and coupled with the messages it's trying to convey, make it a thought provoking, controversial, piece of art and anything that starts people thinking and talking about issues is good in my book. :)
Now with that said, I hope no one is offended, it's just my opionon. :)

Now, videos I find awful are bare videos with no concept, or cheesy effects, like the early 80's videos. I like the music, but the videos....

"Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi. It looks like everyone from the band to the producers were just burned out at this point and just took some footage from various concerts, compiled it, and called it a wrap. Wait a sec...that's pretty much every Bon Jovi video.

I think that Bon Jovi and Poison both pretty much made only performance videos, but at least Bon Jovi had some good production values. I bought the Poison Greatest hits DVD and it is all the same video. Plus the first 5 videos they ever made start out with a TV, showing a Poison video, and it was usually the song that was released before that one.

But WORST video? Electric Youth by Debbie Gibson.

I did enjoy the music of WHAM! but most of their videos made me cringe:

1. LAST CHRISTMAS
2. CLUB TROPICANA
3. WHAM RAP
4. WAKE ME UP BEFORE YOU GO-GO

Another awful video:

TIFFANY - RADIO ROMANCE

Dancingdoll1986

One in particular stands out

David Bowie - Let's Dance

With that one chick that is wearing the high heeled red shoes, and they are traipsing across the dessert or something? I just hated that video!!:hammer:

I really like Duran Videos, but "The Reflex" annoyes me, compared to the others it is just incredible boring and i saw it far too often.

VH1 Uk once had a "Video Nastys" weekend, it was pretty fun to watch as some of the videos were so cheesy (especially the clothes) you were just laughing. F.e. I eat cannibals, nice plastic bag styling!

It's funny that you mention that one because I was going to post that one too. I saw another video of theirs that focused on one thing like that and it was as equally boring. Here are a few bad videos (In My Opinion):

It's The End Of The World As We Know It - R.E.M.
Blue Monday - New Order
The Walk - The Cure
Whip It - Devo

Wake Me Up Before You GoGo - Wham!

Wake me up before you go-go from Wham was horrible as it has been mentioned already.

I did not like the Sledgehammer video by Peter Gabriel either. It gave me a headache and it still does.

Another horrible video is Sign of the times from Prince. Nothing but the lyrics in different colors. Boring and a waste of time.

I was a huge fan of Lita Ford, but her "Hungry" video was a complete waste of video tape! The song's chorus was "I'm so hungry for your sex". The video had Lita standing in water to her ankles wearing pedal-pusher pants, and some little kid kept running in front of the camera. The video was directed by Jacob Dylon, I guess that's why he sings now instead! I have never understood what the video's "concept" was, and what standing in water with a hyper-active toddler had to do with a song about feeling horny?? Maybe it was a subliminal message for birth control:lol:

Any video by Wang Chung or Robert Palmer has got to be some of the worst not to mention "Party all the time"by Eddie Murphy. What a load of crap.

I think one of the worst videos ever is "Dancing in the Streets" by Mick Jagger and David Bowie. It's just awful. :yucky:

Bananarama's "Cruel Summer" is a great song, but it has a stupid video.

I always wondered what the video to this song looked like and I downloaded it recently, needless to say I was so dissapointed at it's lameness. It looked like some crap from the Dukes of Hazzard.

Just about anything by Peter Gabriel. Man, that stuff's hard to sit through.

My brother and I hated "Celebrate the Bullet" (which we would swear for years was by the band of the same name, but we found out just last year it's some band called Selecter).

The video was on all the time...some woman in a dungeon, slithering with her back against the wall...and the repetetive chorus...ugh. I don't know what we hated more, the video or the song.

And NO ONE remembered it! It was like we were the only two people who'd ever seen it. (I'm guessing it was on in the early 80s, because once I got to high school and started working, I didn't watch TV that often).

I know there are other vids I hated, but that one sticks in my head the most because we used to complain about it to each other when it would come on.

I also want to add Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger". Another great song, but a typical cheap ass music video from the early '80s. The video is actually unintentionally hilarious too with them walking so seriously to whereever they are going.

Nearly every music video from the early '80s, (with the exception of the ones that came off of Michael Jackson's Thriller album from 1982/'83) look like they have a budget of 5 dollars while using simple camera techniques from an RCA camcorder. Granted I realize MTV was brand new in the early '80s, but most of those videos look terrible. It always seemed to me that the modern looking music video with good production values and slick opticals didn't come into existance until about 1984 or maybey even 1985.

Have to agree on Like a Prayer - love Madonna but I always change the channel when this comes on.

I love Rush but most of their videos were hard to watch. To much floating around on green spaces.

I love Sledgehammer. I'll keep that one.

Well since that was the worst song of the 20th century, the video could only sicken me more:D

I do know in Canada, alot of early video's were really poor in production quality, (the Spoons, Headpins, Honeymoone Suite, Parachute Club) and the list goes on, yeah Rush never seemed to care too much about their video productions either

6-23-02, 05:22 PM
Yeah, Rush are a band to be heard much more than seen. "Subdivisions" is good, but ever see the 'special' FX on "Red Barchetta"? Stick with what your imagination provides you on that one.
