View Full Version : Official 80sxchange Awards: Category #14 - Best Groundbreaking Video Of The 80s
Iluvthe80s 4-13-02, 10:43 AM This voting sessions topic deals with the "Best Groundbreaking Video Of The 80's". These are videos that were made different from the norm either by using animation, computer graphics, or just doing something plain different than all of the videos out there. I had a hard time deciding because I found 7 videos to put in here, but the rule is only 6. I chose "Opposites Attract" by Paula Abdul over "Harlem Shuffle" by the Rolling Stones even though the Stones video came out first. Paula's video had her interacting with the cartoon character, whereas the Stones just used animation with live shots of the Stones. Paula's barely made it in because her single hit #1 in 1990, but charted in 1989 so I think it will count. Okay, enough talking, let's vote!:) As usual, two week voting session. This voting session ends on 4/27/02.
80sTrivia 4-13-02, 10:57 AM I voted for my personal favorite 80s video, "Take On Me". It's hard to beat such a breath-taking and innovative video. This will go down in history as one of the greatest music vidoes every produced!!!! :)
I voted for the eye-catching "Sledgehammer" video from Peter Gabriel! This innovative video used all of the current effect, of the time, and the results were spectacular! Stop and shoot, claymation, and animaton were just some of the delectible treats within "Sledgehammer"! :thumb: This get's my vote! :)
angeleyes25 4-13-02, 01:44 PM Thriller
Iluvthe80s 4-13-02, 03:44 PM I wanted to vote so bad for the long version of "Blue Jean" because I absolutely love that video. It is funny and as always David Bowie is the best! I decided to vote for A-Ha's "Take On Me" instead. That video incorporated lots of effects and animation that is still even impressive to this day.
What a tough poll, but I went for Thriller. None of the others on the list was made into a 30 minute video like it was.
Roemello 4-13-02, 05:11 PM I went with Thriller. I loved the 'Take on Me' video and still do, but Thriller was just too good

Actually David Bowie's "Jazzin' For Blue Jean" was about 20 to 25 minutes long. It came out a year after "Thriller". Unfortunately, VH-1 nor MTV show it anymore. They just show the shortened version of it where he performs the song at the club.
Christine 4-13-02, 06:09 PM Definitely "Thriller" - it changed Michael Jackson's career, and in part, helped him sell 25 million copies of the album Thriller. That video was really cool and definitely ground-breaking! :) :thumb:
Money For Nothin' - Dire Straits
Opened up a whole new ball game with the computer graphics.
80sSmurf 4-14-02, 06:58 AM Sledgehammer :hammer:
Not my fave tune or video, but the most groundbreaking one (baaad engrish ??) :p
djdaffy1227 4-14-02, 07:14 AM "Take on me". what was it 13 or 14 MTV video awards?
scott28883 4-14-02, 10:26 AM I voted for A-ha, "take on me". very innovative and new at that time. But I have to say "sledgehammer" probably took such a long time with all the clay and animation.
Shortie Blonde 4-14-02, 10:32 AM Money For Nothin was like a break through for computer graphics, and it will always be one of my favorites.
idexpectnoless 4-14-02, 03:06 PM Take On Me. It kept your attention every second.
80s hair 4-14-02, 06:25 PM Sledgehammer :hammer:
Greenway88 4-15-02, 08:02 AM Take On Me is the greatest music video ever!
ImSoooSure 4-17-02, 12:08 AM My favorite is Jazzin for Blue Jean. I voted for Thriller though. I think it had the most impact.
80's Koukla 4-17-02, 04:04 PM I had to go with Sledgehammer. It was a tough choice between that and Take On Me, but the dancing turkeys were the deciding factor! ;)
I think Thriller was instrumental to MJ's career, but not necessarily to the video industry as a whole. Sure there were the choreographed zombies and great make up/costume design, but other than the length of the video, I can't really think of anything groundbreaking about it. I guess the whole turning into a wolf scene was pretty cool...
Iluvthe80s 4-27-02, 09:28 AM This poll is now closed. The official winner for Best Groundbreaking Video Of The 80's is:
Take On Me by A-Ha
