View Full Version : Berlin
Iluvthe80s 4-12-02, 10:40 PM This Los Angeles-based synth-pop group, founded by bassist John Crawford, singer Terri Nunn, and keyboard player David Diamond, made its first national impression with the provocative single "Sex (I'm A... )" from the gold-selling debut EP Pleasure Victim in 1982. The group was filled out by guitarist Rick Olsen, keyboard player Matt Reid, and drummer Rob Brill. Berlin's first full-length LP was the gold Love Life in 1984. In 1985, the group was pared down to a trio of Crawford, Nunn, and Brill. Berlin topped the charts in 1986 with the single "Take My Breath Away," the love theme from the Tom Cruise movie Top Gun. Nunn left for a solo career in 1987, and Crawford and Brill teamed up in the Big F. In 1999, the band reunited to record some new studio material and also performed a concert, which, along with the new songs, was released as 2000's Berlin Live: Sacred & Profane. — William Ruhlmann

80sTrivia 4-12-02, 10:48 PM Berlin had a great sound back in the 80s and were one of my favorite American New Wave bands. I saw Terri Nunn recently on an episode of VH-1's Never Mind the Buzzcocks. She looked fantastic; she even still had the ends of her long blonde hair dyed black, just as she did in the 80s!!! :)
Berlin, definitely one of those bands that should have had so many more hits!
Berlin is one of the best New Wave bands of the 80's. They had a great sound and Terri Nunn's, not only beautiful and sexy, but had a fantastic voice to match! :thumb:
"No More Words" is my favorite song by the group, it pretty much sums up my feelings at times, when the world is getting hectic! :) It's hard to believe little Terri Nunn's come such a long way from that little girl trying to win that disco competition in "Thank God It's Friday"!

Cool! I always loved the way she did her hair. I remember my cousin had dyed her hair like that one time when "No More Words" was on the charts. :) It worked on her because she's blonde.

I had a couple of friends who had the opposite hair, all black with blonde bottoms! They refused to go all blonde and the put their natural hair color back on the tips! Can't say that I blame them! :)
BCRichRocker4JC 8-18-04, 01:28 PM One of my fav New Wave bands. And I love the story my friend tells me about meeting Terri Nunn. He grew up in the Malibu Mesa and was on PCH one time needing a ride (he was a teenager at the time). Terri stopped and picked him up (I don't know if he was alone or not) and took him to where he needed to go (probably just back up the hill on the Mesa where his house was). I would have thought that was cool also as she was hot.
Nikki_91 8-23-04, 10:49 PM Berlin still rocks. I saw them twice in concert in 2002. Teri looked great!
I couldn't wait until Bands Reunited showed them. They're friggan awesome!
I think my fave songs by them are "Metro" and "Sex"
COOL BREEZE 8-23-04, 11:27 PM BERLIN was great! :thumb: Terri Nunn is as talented as she is pretty! ;) I made my own double "greatest hits" CD using all their releases including Terri's solo stuff and all the raritites from soundtracks..etc. Like to put that on every now and then! :D
Berlin were an awesome group!!! I didn't even know they were form the USA! They were sort of techno-rock that I though they came from europe or somewhere else! :D

I think a great many people assumed they were a European band based on their Euro-wave sound and from songs such as the French-inspired "The Metro". :)
DJJEFFCLARKE 10-05-04, 08:20 PM You guys gotta give "masquerade" a listen, great tune.
whistledog 10-05-04, 08:47 PM Berlin were one of my faves from the 80's. The Pleasure Victim EP is still one of the best albums I ever bought :thumb:
SOME TRIVIA: Here in Canada, Berlin were known as Berlin U.S.A. because there was a Canadian gospel group known as Berlin
Their 1982 hit Sex (I'm A ...) was a a minor hit in the U.S. but became a Top 5 hit in Canada
I still listen to them in the car a lot.
more trivia:
Terri Nunn was highly considered to play Princess Leia in the "Star Wars" trilogy. that would have been sooo cool!! :thumb:

That would have been super cool indeed, but had she gotten the role, Berlin might not have existed :(

I know; choosing between making out with Han Solo and doing those movies, or singing for a band....what a dilemma she had!

So true!! They are just known for that song... it annoyed me big time when their other songs are so much better!! :(

What song are you talking about that they are known from?
In NYC radio stations that play 80's will play most of the time only four Berlin hits: 'The Metro', 'Mascarade', 'No More Words' and their biggest hit 'Take My Breath Away'... I did hear Sex (I am...) a couple of times though. :)
Jefferson Starship 10-12-04, 08:55 AM If I talk about Berlin right here, people will say ''Ah yah the band from Top Gun movie'' and If I continue I will heard... ''What? They have a CD?'', ''They have more hits'' ;) And I agree, Metro, Mascarade & No More Words were huge hits too probably not here in Canada! :spankin:
Saw Berlin in concert in '88 (maybe '89) and it was a heck of a show. Terri was awesome live!

I'm not sure about the others, but I do know that Sex (I'm A) was a top 5 hit in Canada, charting at exactly #5 in April of 1983 :thumb:
I'm sure No More Words was a top 40 hit here. If not, we still got it because it was a top 40 hit in the U.S.
There's nothing on the American charts that we don't know about
