| When is there a need for Data Recovery? When you lose valuable computer data stored on a disk, hard drive or tape, a data recovery company can help you. Data can be corrupted by damage to the physical media (e.g. water, fire, magnetic fields, etc) or errors in writing data to the disk (e.g. malfunctioning hard drive, human error, etcetera). A data recovery company can take off all the data still remaining on the media, even though it's damaged, and piece it all together again. In some cases they can even use this recovered data to recreate the lost data. Depending on which media type was being used, the type and extent of damage caused, and the company chosen to recover the data, you should be able to recover at least some (if not all) of your important information. Why can't I do the Data Recovery myself? It's not exactly difficult for those who've done it before, but it's not easy either. One slip-up and you ruin any chance of recovering the data. You also need a "clean room" because you are going to have to open up the hard drive. Dust and/or static electricity can destroy the hard drive instantly and permanantly. Clean rooms are 50,000 times cleaner than normal air measured by the number of particles of 5 micrometers and 0.5 micrometers. Hard disk drive producers use clean rooms to produce hard disk drives at their factories. You should always call a data recovery company before attempting to recover the lost data yourself. Even touching damaged media could cause further problems and decrease the chances of a successful restore. How do I choose a Data Recovery Company? Many data recovery companies offer an emergency data recovery service - if your data is important and you need it back online as soon as possible, these would be the obvious choice. You may also wish to consider on-site data recovery. Engineers from the company will visit your premises and attempt to recover data from your damaged disks or media on-site. This may be useful if your corporate policy doesn't allow sensitive data to leave the office. If this is your first time choosing a data recovery company, you may want to read as much information as possible regarding them. Do they have specialist engineers specifically devoted to data recovery? Have they had previous experience with your type of media? What is their average success rate? These are all questions you should have answers to before making a decision. try to find previous clients of the company you're considering. Once you've decided on a data recovery company, you should contact them and ask questions. They will have questions to ask you about your media, data loss and how it might have occured. The more information you give them the more likely they will be able to help you. Make sure you don't tamper with the damaged disk(s) or media before contacting the data recovery company. If you already have, tell them so they can best advise on how to solve the problem. They should also be able to tell you how to remove the drive/media, and ship it to their labs.
