Joe StrummerJoe Strummer and the Mescaleros are heading into the studio to record their third album which is due out in the spring. During the last tour, the former Clash frontman and his band road-tested new tracks like "Dakar Meantime" and "Coma Girl," and revisited Clash favorites like "Rudie Can't Fail" and "(White Man) in Hammersmith Palais." The Mescaleros' November 15th gig at London Acton Town Hall featured a special surprise fellow Clash guitarist/singer/songwriter Mick Jones took the stage with Strummer for the the first time in nearly twenty years to perform the Clash's "Bankrobber," "White Riot" and "London's Burning." A full Clash reunion may be in store for March 10th, when the Clash along with the Police, AC/DC, Elvis Costello and the Attractions, and the Righteous Brothers are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in New York. Strummer is not yet sure they'll play, but says if they do, expect to hear "White Riot."

The Cult - Rare Cult Demo SessionsThe Cult release "Rare Cult Demo Sessions" which is a special 5 x CD box set issued in a limited edition of 3000 copies worldwide. The set comprises a hefty 5 CD's boasting 77 tracks, 51 of which are previously unreleased. Taking in sessions dating back to 1986 and up until 1991, each set also features extensive sleevenotes. This is a rare opportunity to own a comprehensive and insightful collection of demos from one of the greatest rock bands of the last 20 years. Brimful of raw power and passion, you can hear rudimentary versions of classics in the making, unadorned experimental sessions and almost complete songs. If you've been listening to the Cult's music for a long time then it's quite another trip hearing these demo sessions. When you've known the authorised version of a song for years it's a revelation to be confronted with it's skeleton - the first studio version, usually performed in one take, with no fleshed-out textures - the raw, rock 'n' roll, guitar / bass / drums version. The content of these recordings ranges from early instrumental ideas through works in progress to almost complete songs. Hats off to The Cult; they don't need a top producer to make them sound good - these demos (overseen by the band themselves) have an alchemy beyond the grasp of lesser bands. The unadorned Duffy riffs still have major power and when loose, one-take guide vocals sound this passionate you can recognise that Ian Astbury is one of the best rock vocalists of his generation. There are performances here that the band probably regard as below par according to their own high standards - particularly the first Sonic Temple session where they recorded an incredible 21 songs over two days and the Ceremony demos, recorded equally fast and live in one take - but this is a series of complete, warts 'n' all archival releases for the hardcore fan who can see beyond any shortcomings and appreciate the primitive power and conviction in the music. Only 3000 limited edition numbered copies have been made available through Beggars Banquet Mail Order and this is your chance to own one for £32.
